Fam0us by Th0rn Is an Indie Pop Debut That Bites Back

Th0rn’s new track “fam0us” is a indie-pop bop that circumvents pop convention thanks to its spacey production and clever lyricism.

Not unlike current pop starlet Sabrina Carpenter, th0rn has a way of poking fun at a song’s subject without making it into purely a joke. A short bio on th0rn’s website says she “isn’t afraid to get a little prickly,” and this song’s lyrics support that through their sharp irony and playful faux-pettiness.

The song also has a great melodic sensibility—it’s catchy without ever feeling annoying or derivative of other indie-pop songs. If anything, especially paired with the simplicity of its beat and lead guitar lines, th0rn’s crooning delivery makes it almost feel like The Strokes, though its liberal use of reverb-drenched guitars and synths suggests a shoegaze influence as well. It’s a really great mix of sounds.

For a self-proclaimed “indie debut,” th0rn sounds completely comfortable in this space, despite how the person she’s singing about may wish for her to feel. My only real complaint is that the song’s runtime is much too short because I wish I could vibe in its atmospheric world for just a little longer.
